Chapter 1-2

5) Comments I have
1) The main character is a black man who was a slave.
2) This book take place in the 1850’s located in Virginia.
3) He was a slave who tried to escape from his master.
4) The main character is scared of some people who picks on him like his boss.
5) He was sent to jail because of crime he did not commit.
4) Insightful questions
1) Is the main character going to escape?
2) Did he live with his parents?
3) Is he and He Mars his boo very close?
4) Was Anthony born a slave or was sold to He Mars?

3) Vocabulary
1) Shunned- to avoid somebody or something intentionally (Hamilton 8)

2) Over doer- a word used to indicate a position directly above something, either resting the top of something, or above the upper suffer of something with a space.(Hamilton 9)

3) Spoilt-something that was spoiled but the past tense of spoil(Hamilton 13)

2) Examples of literary terms
1) First point of view-“the hair above his lip was white too, and yellowish and usually full of shortnin’ johny cake crumbs” (Hamilton 12) this quote came from the first person view of the character the author whose explaining how someone looks like.



2) Man vs Man- “ swiftly Big Walker reached up and slapped him a stinging blow. It brought tears to his eyes and a burning hatred for the black man (Hamilton 13) this is man vs man conflict because the main character has problems with his boss.




1) summary
1) The Main character is name Anthony Burns and he’s a slave who been working for He Mars. He Mars always loves to pick on Anthony and hits him, and make jokes about him. From all of Anthony years of being a slave he wants to escapes.












Chapter 3-4

5) Comments I have
1) He escaped from He Mars.
2) Anthony met new people and friend while on his escape.
3) He was confused about going to another person’s church because before as a slave for He Mars he was committed to not go to another or different church.
4) Anthony was dancing in the church while feeling guilty.
5) His new friends were getting suspicious of Anthony burns if he escaped and tried hiding from getting catch.
4) Insightful questions
1) Could slaves go to assigned churches or any church they wanted?
2) What would happen to Anthony if he was caught?
3) When a slave could be free?
4) Is he going to get caught by his master?

1) Protruding (pg 20)- to stick out from the surroundings, or make something do this

2) Communion (pg 20)- a Christian sacrament that commemorates Jesus Christ's Last Supper, with the priest or minister consecrating bread and wine that is consumed by the congregation

3) Commutates (pg22)- to convert alternating electric current to direct current or vice versa

2) Examples of literary terms
1) “Anthony listened. He felt sick inside. Asa’s words broke his heart” (Hamilton pg 23) this is an example of a personification because he’s describing that his heart could break like an glass object or an object that can break.



2) “darknight. It made him shiver, but it was exciting too.” (Hamilton Pg 27) this is example of situational irony because we know the character is cold from the dark night and not really enjoy his position he’s in, he’s just trying to make everything sounds alright.




1) Summary
1) From this chapter Anthony Burns was trying to hide away from the getting caught from his master during his escape. He met new people and went to a different church he felt guilty of going but enjoy praying the lord.
